Why does my new toy have an unusual smell?

The smell is not uncommon and it doesn't exist with all toys, but does for many.

The smell is caused by phthalates, a chemical used to soften jelly and some other materials. The quickest way to eliminate the smell is to wash your toy with sex toy cleaner and warm water and let it air out before you use it.
